Less than one year since the ground-breaking ceremony of the 2023 Pacific Games Stadium Project in May 2021, the Peopleโs Republic of China (PRC) handed over the first of the eight projects under the Pacific Games Stadiums project that is constructed by China Civil, Engineering and Construction Company (CCECC) โ the โtraining track and fieldโ designed as a support field for the main Pacific Games stadium, and an early replacement of the old track and field at KGVI grounds where the main national stadium is currently under construction.
The official handover took place on Friday 22nd April 2022. The Prime Minister, Hon. Manasseh D. Sogavare received the brand-new track and field facility from H. E Ambassador Li Ming of the Peoples Republic of China.
The track and field facility comprises a full-size football / rugby pitch, an all-weather four-lane 400 meter running track and a six-lane 100-meter track.
Games Facilities Committee Chairman, Mr. Joe Sika stated, โThis is a milestone achievement in our preparation for the Pacific Games, both in terms of Sol2023 sport infrastructure and training facilities for local athletes. This international standard running track will be used by athletes to prepare for local, regional, and international competitionsโ says Mr. Sika.
Mr. Sika further added that despite the Covid19 outbreaks and lockdowns, the progress of the 2023 Pacific Games Stadium Project has been on schedule.
The Secondary Stadium for the new track and field will have a 1000 seat grandstand and offices. Apart from the secondary stadium, the six other projects under the Pacific Games Stadiums project being constructed by the CCECC are the Main National 10,000 Seat Stadium, the Tennis Centre, the Aquatic Center, the Hockey Field, the Multi-purpose hall, and a Sports Admin and Food Court Building.
